Hypermiling - Tips & Techniques

By now, most of you have heard about hypermiling on the news or read about it online.

By basic definition, hypermiling is the action drivers take that increases and exceeds the manufactured (and governments!) certified “estimated miles per gallon.” In other words, hypermiling is coaxing additional mileage out of a gallon of gas just by altering driving habits.

There are literally hundreds of tips and techniques that can help you increase mileage in your car by hyermiling. Some are more well known and easier to implement. Others are far more obscure and, frankly, rather ingenious techniques. As discussed in this website, there are several techniques that will increase mileage. Lets take a look:

Basic Hypermiling Techniques

  • Spark Plugs - Installing high performance spark plugs can allow for better fuel economy. To see more information and recommendations on spark plugs, read this article on how spark plugs increase mileage
  • Air Filters - Changing your air filter can also increase mileage. Clean air means a cleaner engine!
  • Cruise Control - Using your cruise control properly can increase your fuel mileage
  • Reduce the mass - Limit the amount of extra junk in your car. Every gram of mass your car carries impacts the fuel economy. Lose the extra tonnage and increase mileage
  • Speed limit - Follow the posted speed limits (how much time do you *really* save going 10 mph over?) and you will increase your mileage
  • Of course, my guess is most of the above you already knew or at least had a suspicion about. The truth is, they do work. Each little bit you can change will have a small impact on your fuel mileage. Add them all up, and then you are really making an impact.

What is even better, is I found a killer book that contains very detailed tips and techniques that can make the gains you see from the list above seem like a drop in the bucket.

Most everyone is considering changing filters and plugs, coasting more etc… but the ideas uncovered in this special report book truly will make you sit back and have that “ah ha!” moment we all need. In fact, there are over 60 different fuel saving ideas and tips in this book.

You can check out the book here: Save Money on Gas

Yes, it does cost a little money for this book- but very little (think less than a 1/2 tank of gas!) - and if you implement some of the more advanced gas saving and hypermiling techniques, you will make that back in your first two fill ups.
